Indonesia Promotes Spirit to Recover Together in the 2022 G20 Presidency

For the first time, Indonesia holds the G20 Presidency, a cooperation forum of 20 of the world's major economies. The Indonesian presidency is for one year, from December 1, 2021, to November 30, 2022. The handover from Prime Minister Mario Draghi (the Italian presidency) to President Joko Widodo took place on October 31, 2021, at the G20 Summit in Rome, Italy.

The G20 is an international forum focusing on policy coordination in economics and development. It represents the world’s economic and political power, with its member representing 80% of the world’s GDP, 75% of global exports, and 60% of the global population The G20 consists of 19 countries and 1 region, namely: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, People's Republic of China (PRC), France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, and the European Union.

Established in 1999, the G20 was born as a response to the 1997-1998 global economic crisis. Its objective was to ensure that the world emerged from the crisis and to create strong and sustainable global economic growth. In the beginning, the G20 was a meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Banks Governors, yet has now evolved to include discussions of various development issues. Since 2008, the G20 has also begun to have Head of States attending the Summit.

Now, the world is in another multidimensional crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a group of the world's major economies with political and economic power, the G20 can drive the world’s recovery.

As such, the Indonesian G20 Presidency carries the spirit of recover together with the theme "Recover Together, Recover Stronger." Indonesia chose this theme since the world is currently under pressure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring joint and inclusive efforts in finding a way out or solutions for recovery.

To achieve this target, the Indonesian Presidency is focusing on three priority sectors as the key for a strong and sustainable recovery, which are:

1. Strengthening of Global Health Architecture
It is evident from the current pandemic that the global health architecture needs to be strengthened. This is not only to face the current pandemic but also to prepare the world to respond better and have the capacity to deal with future health crises.

2. Digital Transformation
Digital transformation is one of the key solutions in moving the economy during a pandemic and has become a new source of economic growth. For this reason, the Indonesian presidency will focus on enhancing digital skills and digital literacy to ensure an inclusive digital transformation for all.

3. Energy Transition
The Indonesian Presidency will promote energy transition toward new and sustainable energy by prioritizing energy security, accessibility, and affordability. This will ensure a green and sustainable future and manage the climate change issues more effectively.

Under the inclusiveness principle, the Indonesian Presidency also invites guest countries and international organizations to participate in the G20 events. On various occasions, President Joko Widodo emphasized that this inclusiveness is the priority of Indonesia's leadership in the G20, to "leave no one behind."
